PETITION TO THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

Re: The official invitation to Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Party to visit the United States this year

Dear President Barack Obama:

According to news source from the State Department, we learned that the United States has formally invited Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong, General Secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Party, to visit the United States in 2015.

WHEREAS:

  1. The Vietnamese Communist Party has committed many crimes against the people of Vietnam from 1945 to the present.
  2. The Vietnamese Communist Party does not represent the people of Vietnam.
  3. The government and the National Assembly in Vietnam are currently established by the Vietnamese Communist Party, and  are not democratically elected by the people and hence do not  represent the people of Vietnam.
  4. The regime in Vietnam is a totalitarian one; it denies its citizens of all universal freedom and human rights, namely freedom of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of election, freedom of association, and so on.
  5. Recently, the government of Vietnam has increased its repression including harassment, detention and imprisonment of peaceful activists for human rights and democracy. In parallel, The State Department and International Human Rights organizations have frequently reported on the serious human rights violations by the Vietnamese Government.
  6. Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong, as a General Secretary of the Vietnamese Communist Party,  does not deserve to be invited to the US soil as a special guest nor he is a person of national interests.

Therefore, we respectfully request the President and the US Congress:

  1. Review and cancel the invitation extended to Mr. Nguyen Phu Trong to visit the United States.
  2. Setting clear conditions on concrete improvements of human rights before extending any trade privileges to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

Thank you for your consideration,
